Carpal Tunnell Syndrome - Victims
Carpal Tunnell Syndrome symptoms reported to their doctors in 1988 were 2.8 million people. As per the British study in 1998, experts estimated that 7% to 16% of the population experience Carpal Tunnell Syndrome. This number is increasing gradually and people above the age 54 are at higher risk then the younger adults.
The victims of the Carpal Tunnell Syndrome can be identified as follows:
Workers :
The main victims of Carpal Tunnell Syndrome are the people who work. In them the people who combine the force and repetitive motion with their fingers and hands for long hours are at high risk. Some Examples for type of workers are the people who are involved in the meat and fish packing industries and workers using vibrating tools, like jackhammers or chain saws. Even in the period of 1860 the Meat packers complained of pain and loss of hand function. Even today, the incidence of Carpal Tunnell Syndrome in meat, poultry, and fish packing industries may be as high as 15%. According to a study along with these workers, workers who are involved in assemble airplanes have a higher risk of Carpal Tunnell Syndrome. High risk of Carpal Tunnell Syndrome can be found not only who are working in assembly line such as food and beverages processing’s but also can be found al workers, dentists, and dental techniciansvirtually any workers who use their hands and wrists repetitively.
Although there is increased number of carpal tunnell syndrome cases have increased more but Carpal Tunnell Syndrome causes due to keyboard has gained more pulicity. It is actually lower than those in occupations involving heavy labor. The main cause of CTS in typist is the force with which they struck the keys of keyboard. As per one of the study which says that the typists who are effected by Carpal Tunnell Syndrome struck the keys with grater force than those that of the typist who doesn’t show the symptoms of Carpal tunnell syndrome and even some people are not aware of with which force they are struck the keys. Say fro instance a typist exerts a pressure up to 25 tons of pressure each day. The other people who are ay risk are those who are engaged in domestic works like cooking, housework, knitting, sewing and needlepoint, carpentry and heavy use of power tools. Even the leisure activities like computer games, spots and card playing can lead to Carpal Tunnell Syndrome.
Women :
Many studies on Carpal tunnell syndrome but not all said that the women are more prone to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome than the men but the explanation for this not known say it. The dual role of women that is the hand-intensive nature of housework and typing may contribute to a higher risk to women than the men. However the Hormonal changes, appear to play a major role as evidenced by an increased Carpal tunnell syndrome symptoms during pregnancy, while taking oral drugs, during the postpartum period, and menopause on the other hand a study of pregnant women with CTS, showed the condition developed during any point of pregnancy; no single trimester showed higher risk when compared to others.
Obesity :
One of the main causes of Carpal Tunnell Syndrome is Obesity. The people with Square wrist i.e., thickness and the width are about the same, are more prone to Carpal tunnell syndrome, than in those with the more common rectangular wrists even though studies have failed to prove this. It is also suggested that the size of carpal tunnel is also responsible for disorder but some recent studies have proved that there is no difference in carpal tunnel between the women having Carpal Tunnnell Syndrome and those women who did not having Carpal Tunnell Syndrome. It has been claimed by the researches that people with poor upper back strength are more prone to Carpal Tunnell Syndrome.
Medical Problems :
The autoimmune medical conditions like the hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis and the systemic lupus erythematosus leads to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. 15% to 25% of the diabetic patients are suffering from Carpal tunnel syndrome. In the process of hemodialysis, proteins called beta 2-microglobulin is build up in hand leading to Carpal Tunnell Syndrome. People with hepatitis C are also at the risk of Carpal Tunnell Syndrome and even the people suffering with Down’s syndrome are at high risk of Carpal tunnell syndrome.
Other Factors :
Even the factors like poor nutrition, stress, previous injuries, and cigarette smoking can lead to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a serious problem, which can range from a small inconvenience to a stage of disabling of hand depending upon the patient’s causes for Carpal Tunnell Syndrome, persistence and the individual characteristics. Carpal tunnel syndrome cases are many times mild, and sometimes they resolve on their own. Once a pregnant women gives birth, there can be reduction of wrist swelling and so are the symptoms of Carpal Tunnell syndrome and sometimes proper treatment of other medical conditions that may lead to Carpal tunnell syndrome can in turn reduce the wrist swelling.
When the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome advanced cases are not treated may lead to atrophy of muscles at the base of the thumb and this will lead to permanent loss of sensation in them. The Carpal Tunnell Syndrome, if not taken care can become so severe that people may not be able to do their job or do any simple tasks at their home and ultimately force them to undergo surgical treatment. This surgical treatment will lead them to miss their job for many days and even can lead to stop working if their hands get permanently disabled.
Work associated causes of Carpal tunnel syndrome have severe impact on the work place. Workers who are suffering with Carpal Tunnell Syndrome easily get exhausted and also experience pain and discomfort, by which they are unable to work properly. According to a study, nearly half of all employees diagnosed with Carpal Tunnell Syndrome either have changed the jobs or were absent for 30 months after the diagnosis.
