Are Apple Mac Computers Infectable?

For as long as Apple computers have been around, they have claimed they cannot be infected by any virus or malware. However, it has been proven that this is untrue and the Mac or Apple brand of computer is just as infectable as any other computer is. So how do they become infected and what can you do to protect your Mac from getting an infection?

Transmission of Infections

While there are only some forms of viruses or malware that can infect a Mac computer, the transmission of the infection is the same as any other.

The DNS Changer infection, from 2007 until now, has been the most prevalent infection of Mac computers. According to ZDNet.com, the DNS Changer uses pornographic videos and other social media as a means to infecting computers.

By deceiving those people into thinking they are opening a video file or a music file, they then willingly open it and the infection installs itself onto the Mac computer.

The infection can spread from computer to computer through email attachments, USB keys and links sent from the Mac computer user from the infected computer, unknowingly.

New Mac Computer Malware Protection

Just this year, Apple implemented Secure Mac, a version of anti-malware for Mac computers. What is interesting about this implementation is that Apple still claims that Mac cannot get an infection.

In addition, a popular anti-virus program for Windows called BitDefender, released the first ever anti-virus stand alone program for Mac computers and it is used as any anti-virus program is used on a Windows system.

The best way to stop infections from happening is to not open anything that you have not scanned with an anti-virus program, even if you do have an “uninfectable” Mac computer, you can still pass on infections.
