Useful Ergonomic Tips For Working People

If you spend 8-10 hours a day in an office environment it is vital to have the proper equipment and atmosphere to promote pain free, productive workflow.

By using the appropriate equipment and preparing for the work atmosphere, you can stay productive and efficient throughout your workday.

Your Work Station: Your office area should be highly adjustable.  If you work on a computer all day, the ergonomic computer keyboard should be placed on a platform that can be moved and tilted up and down.

This will prevent back and wrist discomfort and injury.  In addition, your chair should be adjustable to provide the correct height and lumbar support.

Equipment: Ergonomically correct keyboards, gel pads and adjustable chairs are just some of the equipment that should be provided in your office to prevent injury.

If you spend a long time on the phone each day you should have the phone placed within easy reach as well as a headset to provide hands free telephone communication.

Lighting: Direct and harsh bright lighting can cause eyestrain.  For ergonomically correct lighting, you should have lighting that you can adjust depending on the task.  If sunlight is an issue due to nearby windows, then blinds should be provided to control natural lighting.

Ventilation: You should not be forced to sit directly under air-conditioning or heating vent.  The cold or hot air being forced on you can cause extreme temperature discomfort.  In addition, this constant air can cause dry eyes and result in extreme eye soreness and irritation.

Preparation: Be prepared to adjust to your work environment.  Not all work surroundings are ideal.  Prepare for any discomfort you might come across.  If you are forced to sit under an air conditioning vent, then have a sweater and fingerless gloves handy to keep your torso and wrists warm.  If heat is an issue, then remember to wear light clothing and invest in a small table fan.

This will help prevent back and wrist pain.  If the lighting is excessively bright in your work area then invest in a glare guard for your monitor.  Many of you will be forced to work in an office that is static.  Neither the desk nor the chair can be adjusted.

Prepare for this situation with an ergonomically correct keyboard and wrist wraps if your desk cannot be adjusted.  With a fixed and unadjustable chair, consider using a footrest and some type of lumbar support like a rolled towel or small pillow.

By following the few tips above, you will be sure to have an ergonomically correct comfortable and healthy workspace.
