Laptop Or Desktop? Consider Ergonomics

laptopThe question that faces many of us is whether to use a laptop or a desktop for work.  Certainly the small size, light weight and portability of a laptop beats a traditional desktop computer in terms of convenience; but when it comes to ergonomics the desktop does score out over a laptop.

Because you have the option of varying the distance of the computer screen from you and also adjusting the keyboard to suit you with a desktop you can align these in an optimal manner that makes the most ergonomic sense for your body dimensions, eyesight and reach. The following reasons make a laptop less ergonomic than a desktop:

  • With a laptop you cannot adjust the screen height and so you usually end up looking down a t the screen if the keyboard is placed at a level that is comfortable enough for you to type.
  • The keyboard and screen are joined and indivisible so this is not a flexible arrangement in the way that a desk top is.
  • The keyboard is usually flat and non ergonomic in a laptop
  • In a laptop you will usually have to deal with some common problems like poor neck, arm, and wrist placement and the smaller the laptop, the more acute this issue can be.
