Is Your Laptop Energy Inefficient?

laptopThere are some telltale signs that evince the fact that your laptop[Ergonomic laptop] is perhaps using up more power than it ought, that it is inefficiently using up resources.

Firstly there is the hum of the fan, which if it is obviously audible, is likely to be the sign of a laptop that is working inefficiently.

Secondly there is the heat output: if your laptop is overheating, chances are that it is not working optimally and is wasting power.

Sometimes the laptop may actually shut down, which it is programmed to do if it overheats. This should give you an idea that it is definitely time to do something.

  • One reason why your computer fan is noisy is probably that it needs some cleaning. Unscrewing the area of the laptop where the fan is fitted and treating it to some compressed air cleaning, can actually help a lot. This can reduce noise and improve cooling efficiency.
  • Permit air to circulate freely below the laptop so that the fan is able to do its job efficiently. If possible raise it just a little bit from the surface that you are working on, which will allow the air to circulate freely.  You can tilt the laptop by placing a thin book below its rear edge, or you can place a couple of rulers below the front and the back edges, thereby lifting it off the surface and creating space beneath for air to circulate more freely.
  • Also make sure that the surface that you keep the laptop on is flat and cool. If there is a cloth layer between the laptop and the surface it rests on, it is likely to increase the temperature because it will likely reflect the heat that the laptop is emitting.
  • Also shut down the laptop before putting it into the bag, if you leave it on standby to instantly start it later, the environment inside the bag may be too warm for the laptop to work in and it will then overheat. This excessive heat can actually damage the screen and the hardware as well.
  • Charge the laptop battery only until it indicates that it is full. Don’t charge it beyond that point because it will heat the battery and consequently your laptop as well.
  • When buying a laptop, do your research well. Some brands are more prone to heating than others probably because of design or other issues.
  • Run antivirus programs to check that your computer is free from performance-compromising spyware and malware.
