Visual Conditions Affecting Regular Computer Users

healthy computingWhen most people think of problems that are associated with using a computer on a daily basis they think of software problems, connectivity issues, and slow processing speeds, not health related problems.

However, the truth is that many people who regularly work from the computer actually suffer from vision problems that may be posing a threat to their health without even realizing it.

For example, do you often suffer from headaches? This is a telltale sign that your vision may be affected by long term computer use which should be taken seriously since if you do not take care of the results you may end up with one of the following visual conditions.

The two most common visual conditions that affect regular computer users are very recognizable since a wide range of people already suffer from them: nearsightedness (formerly called myopia) and farsightedness (formerly known as hyperopia).

If you already suffer from one of these conditions, staring at a computer screen for extensive amounts of time can make your vision become worse since you are straining the eye by concentrating on close distances for extended amounts of times which corrective glasses or contacts are not designed for.

Another common visual condition that occurs for people who use the computer frequently is presbyopia which is when you have to hold reading material farther away from the face in order to see it clearly.

Although it normally starts to rear its head in people around the age of forty, people who use the computer on a regular basis may strain their eyes excessively which causes them to sit farther away from the computer in order to see correctly.

Eventually, if corrective help is not sought it may get the point that even while sitting at a great distance from the screen they cannot read correctly without squinting which leads to more eye strain, headaches, and sometimes even a migraine.

Finally, the last visual condition that people who regularly use the computer suffer from is called binocular vision which is simply double vision.

Even if you have 20/20 vision you can start to suffer from the binocular vision if you strain your eyes too much and one starts to lag behind the other.

While you may be able to see correctly most of the time, after long periods of time on the computer you may start to see double which looks more like blurring making it harder to concentrate and can become long term instead of just while sitting at the computer if not addressed immediately by an optician.
