Vision Friendly Computer Usage

Researches on computer usage found that nearly 80% of the computer users develop a condition called computer vision syndrome or eye fatigue.

This is caused because of excessive strain to the muscles of eyes from rigorous use of computers and looking at the screen for more than 2-3 hours a day.

Eye fatigue and computer use are closely related. Prolonged use of computers will surely create this problem called eye fatigue.

The radiations from the monitor screen hurt the internal eye structures and you feel pain on your eyes.

The radiation also harms the retina of your eyes which in the long run can cause vision problems like myopia, hypermetropia, watery eyes or redness. If you suffer from computer vision syndrome or eye fatigue you will have the following symptoms.

  • Burning or tired eyes when you constantly focus on the monitor screen for more than one hour. This is because of too closeness of eyes and screen of the computer. Always keep the monitor at least 30 inches away from your eyes.
  • Eye strain due to muscle fatigue is common symptom of prolonged computer use and eye fatigue. There may be intraocular muscle spasm and eventually pseudo-myopia. In this condition you will have blur image of distant objects when you suddenly look all of a sudden to some distant object after looking at the screen for more than an hour at a stretch.
  • Itching of eyes is another symptom of eye fatigue. Your eyes would have some kind of itching and burning sensation. You would feel like rubbing the eyes with your fingers.
  • The other symptoms of eye fatigue caused due to computer use are – blurred vision, difficulty in concentrating in a particular area, headache, red eyes, increase of nearsightedness, slow refocusing; change in color perception, insomnia and swelling of eyes to some extent.

Precautions to take to avoid eye fatigue:

  • Before you start using a computer, you must get your eyes examined. If the doctor finds the need of providing you specs, get the right kind of it and always wear them while you work in front of computers. Have an anti-reflective (AR) coating applied to your lenses. It will protect your eyes to a great extent.
  • Make your monitor glare free. It should be placed so that no other lights produce a glare on it which is quite disturbing and irritating to your eyes.
  • Take breaks and make a habit of removing your eyes from the screen of the monitor every 10-15 minutes.
  • Blink your eyes. Keeping eye open without blinking make them dry and cause eye muscle fatigue.
  • When you take stretch breaks make sure that you sprinkle fresh running water on your eyes. It would provide soothing effect to your eyes.
  • If your pain persists, take break and visit an ophthalmologist for check up of your eyes.
