Safe Computer Ergonomics For Seniors

The computer has had many takers over the years, what with its grasp on almost everything that is a part of your lives.

There are many who even at the cost of cutting down expenses elsewhere, would venture forth to have a PC at home.

And they all have ready excuses, the juniors put the need blame on the elders and the elders say that perhaps a PC is necessary to keep their grandchildren interested in life.

Having said that, it would not be an exaggeration to assume that the senior brigade is not lost on the art of trying to get savvy on a device, which was not there in their youth. Better late than never!!

The PC has its share of woes. And if you’re the senior of your house and interesting in tapping a hand or two at the keyboard, you should be aware of the downside.

You can always be home to repetitive injuries and disorders pertaining to the machine and are better advised to keep certain things in place. The little matters of significance are:

  • If you are beyond 50, chances are that either you continually have backaches or are prone to it. It is thus elemental to keep the computer chair specially designed to adapt to your natural bent and flexibility. The switches and other plug-ins should be at arm length in case there is a shortage of kids in the house who would otherwise do these things for you.
  • The computer should be in a bright enough place to ensure that your eyes do not bear the strain of reading the letters. The default size of the fonts should anyway be at 16, a size big enough to make the letters legible for all.
  • There should not be any electrical appliance in very close proximity to the computer or else there would be a good chance of malfunctions.

You should remember not to be on the PC for longer durations, as there would be adverse effect on your sight.

The keyboard and monitor of the PC should be perfectly posed to fit. The eye level while sitting on the computer chair should meet the top of the screen. The screen should be tuned to pleasant brightness so as not to disturb your mental poise. The whole setup should be on a user-friendly basis, settled nicely on the computer table.

The seniors generally love to play card games and do certain things that befit their age. It is generally logical to keep a separate login id for them with strong anti virus. The musculo-skeletal disorders, CTS and RSI may happen to a relatively charged senior at home.

If you, as a senior, still love to be for hours on the PC, it is better to take little breaks between your stints and do slight stretching of arms, and circling of shoulders and neck to be computer fit. Get the set up ergonomically correct, and once getting it done, do not disturb it for anything in the world.

Being fit is your prime responsibility at this age to your children after all.
