Light Ergonomics – What Is It?

poor postureLight ergonomics has to do with the relationship between a light source and the individual.

This can refer to insufficient light or poor distribution of light.

It also deals with factors such as poor or improper contrast, excessive glare or flickering, thermal heating and acoustic noise such as fluorescents.

Light ergonomics also deals with the color spectrum (as with amber street lighting). Poor light ergonomics can cause a number of problems such as:

  • Low productivity can be the result of low, insufficient or inadequate lighting. Not only can it make work physically more difficult it can make one feel depressed or less inclined to creative productivity.
  • Poor light ergonomics is also seen to cause people to make more mistakes; and is seen to be connected to higher human error rates.
  • Poor, insufficient or patchy lighting can have the very obvious result of producing eyestrain and / or other problems such as headaches.
  • There seems to be greater absenteeism or general malaise with poor light ergonomics
  • Low employee morale could be another obvious fall out of a poorly lit, dismal looking work environment.

Paying attention to light ergonomics in a work place may be expensive now, but it will even out and pay for itself in the long run.
