Glaucoma And Computer Usage

glaucomaYears ago sitting in front of a television screen was believed to be hazardous so it is no surprise that scientists have discovered that people using computers for prolonged periods of time can be more at risk from glaucoma.

A link has been discovered between short-sightedness, the long term use of a computer and the suspected diagnosis of glaucoma.

During the study of over twenty thousand employees, of various Japanese companies, they were categorized as either light, moderate or heavy computer users.

The different usage was separated further by the number of years compared with time spent in an individual session. In general, the heavier users tended to be younger men, perhaps showing a sign of the times.

Visual field anomalies were discovered in over five percent of the total employees. In the heavy category, users were more likely to be long or short sighted and approximately a third, are suspected of having glaucoma.

It must be noted that the condition of glaucoma is irreversible and affects over half a million UK citizens. With the increase of computer ownership soaring with the lowering cost of technology health care bodies must be vigilant in coming years.

A spokesman from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists believes that much more research is required and that the results of the Japanese study may be misleading, as the population of Japan are noted for having a high degree of myopia anyway.

The findings needed to be considered in the light before jumping to any conclusions.
