Daily Computing May Impact Your Spinal Cord Without Proper Ergonomics

Computers are blessings for mankind for their effectiveness in making our life faster, simpler and smarter.
But, they have been nuisances for those who have suffered severe problems due to regular use of computers specially their backs or spinal problems.
Now the question is – does that mean we should avoid use of computers to save our spines?
Absolutely not! It is not necessary to avoid them, only what is required is to use them in proper manner and follow some strict guidelines to keep the spinal problems caused by regular computer use at bay. Computers cause not only wrist injuries but spinal injuries too.
Carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive strain injury etc are some of the common problems that are suffered by people, students and children who sits in front of computers and laptops for more than five-six hours a day. But these problems are not so lethal like the spinal problems that are caused by regular computer use.
A recent study found that improper posture of sitting in front of computers may lead to spinal problems like spondylitis, herniated disc or disc rupture. These are very severe problems which worsen day by day and at some point they make you completely immovable.
The neck and shoulder pain is a common spinal problem of computer users. This disorder is usually multidimensional, occupational, and personal too. Sedentary work at computers in improper posture of your body leads to spinal problems.
The bending of your back at irregular positions for long hours tends to hurt your spine. The spine is a long vertebra that runs from the neck to the lumbar region of your back.
Rigorous computer use without any sort of ergonomics and bending back mostly affect the middle and the upper spine. The following are few spinal problems caused by regular use of computers:
Neck and Shoulder Pain: Early symptoms are problems in moving your neck normally towards left or right; raising your shoulder above a particular point and pain and numbness in these areas. The other symptoms are – shooting pain, tingling, swelling and muscle spasms.
The onset of such symptoms may occur when feeling particularly pressured or stressed. Sometimes the pain also triggers head ache and there will be mid back pain. [Back Pain Relief]
Herniated Disc: This is a very major spinal problem which may occur due to repetitive injury to the spinal cord. Sitting bent or in improper position for long hours everyday may slowly injure one or two discs of the spine.
They eventually press each other which cause lot of pain on the back. The nerves that pass through the spinal cord are pressed that leads to unbearable pain and swelling.
Thus you see how poor posture of sitting in front of computers, keyboard usage and working too long without breaks can cause severe spinal injuries.
