Computers Can Be Dangerous In Many Ways

As computers have become part of daily life so has injuries associated with computers which have risen almost seven times in just the past few years according to researchers.
Injuries with computers include those sustained after falling over cables or injuries when poorly placed equipment falls on top of people.
According to the same study which looked at 78,000 injuries that were computer related and treated at US hospitals, children are highly at risk, with the number of accidents involving children raising by 732% from 1994 to 2006.
The study was conducted by researchers in Columbus in Ohio and was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
Similarly, Britain has also seen a rise in computer related accidents as statistics show that in 1995 there were only 800 accidents but in 2002 there were 2,100.
Most of these accidents were caused when the injured tripped over cables and wires that were poorly grouped together on the floors of spare bedrooms and home offices.
Additionally, others were hurt in UK similar to those in the US when equipment fell onto their owners. Of those, usually the victims received head injuries or were cut on sharp corners of the equipment.
Reports such as these led Dr. Lara McKenzie who compiled the statistics at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Centre for Injury Research and Policy to state that as computers become a larger part of daily life more research needs to be completed so that computer related injuries can be prevented or at least treated promptly and correctly when sustained.
In the UK, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) reported that a third of the injuries involved children under 15 and that most were minor.
However, a few can be threatening including the case of a six year old who suffered serious burns after spilling liquid on a computer which caused an electrical fire.
A Rospa spokesman stated that any time technology becomes more integrated with daily life and the amount of people who are inured as a result rises.
The spokesman also stated that computer related injuries have been on the rise since the end of the 90’s.
He also added that accidents in general tend to happen more when people are rushing or acting in haste so as a precaution to prevent injuries do not try to lift more equipment than is comfortable and slowly transport items instead of rushing with them.
