Buying Ergonomic? Ask The Following Questions

wrist painMarketing techniques being what they are, they may often be rather misleading.

The current buzzwords are always sought to be woven into a marketing strategy, and the term ergonomics is no different.

Basically ergonomics is the science of designing the job, equipment, and workplace to fit the worker as defined by Wikipedia.

Proper ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries, which can develop over time and can, lead to long-term disability and so everyone is keen to get on to the ergonomic bandwagon.

The term ergonomic is appended to a whole lot of gizmos, devices and office aids that may actually be no such thing.

As a prudent consumer, it is important to be aware of the pitfalls of going with the clever marketing and asking some searching questions when you are considering buying something that claims to be ‘ergonomic’.

Remember a faulty design, which is not properly researched can actually make things worse, so remember to ask the following questions when buying ergonomic products:

  • Are the claims made by the manufacturer reasonable? Does it seem likely and sensible that the product can deliver all that it promises? Or does it sound too good to be true? Because remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
  • Is the manufacturer able to substantiate his claim with research, or studies or any kind? The reason that good quality products cost more than others is not only because they use superior quality raw material and more stringent quality control, but also because a lot of research and development went into making and developing the product for the market. So if ergonomic claims are made, they should be backed up by something credible terms of studies, research, tests etc.
  • What do the reviews say? Luckily for us we live in times where we can check what is being said about just about any product that you may be interested in buying. So do some basic research and see what users are saying about a product before you buy it.
  • Does it feel right? When you buy a new product chances are you will have to get used to it, rather like new shoes that, once broken in will be wonderfully comfortable. But rather like the new shoes that continue to be uncomfortable even after several days, if the ergonomic product continues to feel uncomfortable even after substantial use, then it is perhaps not right for you.
