Sensible Monitor Setup Prevents Eye And Neck Strain

Off late, lots of complaints about back pain, carpal tunnel, repetitive strain injury, finger pains, arm stretching problems, head ache, eye strain and others have been reported by people who spend long hours before computers.
All these problems have been due to the wrong ergonomics of computer usage by workplace employees, college students and other technology and Internet freaks.
If you too spend a long time before computers you need to care your computer ergonomics to avoid such health problems which eventually may become a major problem.
The monitor is the one which is highly responsible for some fatigue syndromes like – eye strain, redness of eyes, insomnia, neck pain, head ache and teary eyes.
Monitors usually cause computer vision syndrome (CVS). That is the radiations from the screen hurt the internal eye structures and you feel pain on your eyes.
The radiation also harms the retina of your eyes which in the long run can cause vision problems like myopia or hypermetropia. Therefore you should follow few important tips for monitor usage.
Tips for Monitor Usage
- There are two types of monitors – Liquid crystal display (LCD) and Cathode ray tube (CRT). Of these the flat panel liquid crystal display is a choice. It emits less radiation compared to the CRT monitors which have been in use for a long time.
- Before you start using a computer, you must get your eyes examined. If the doctor finds the need of providing you specs, get the right kind of it and always wear them while you work in front of computers. Have an anti-reflective (AR) coating applied to your lenses. It will protect your eyes to a great extent.
- Never strain your eyes with the light of the monitor falling on your eyes. Make the room well lit. Don’t allow too much of bright light from outside to fall on the screen but ensure sufficient light in the room to avoid stress on your eyes.
- Dim overhead lights, use blinds or curtains to block the sun light coming that way. Always position your computer monitor screen such a way that there nothing can create such glare. Working for more than 1 hour in such glare of light will strain your eyes.
- Always keep a comfortable distance between you and the computer monitor. Maintain at least 40 inches of distance between you and monitor.
- Your neck position is very important while you keep your eyes on the monitor. Position your monitor so that you don’t need to bend your neck in a discomforting position.
- Move your head to different positions after every half an hour. And don’t forget to look at some other place or distant object removing your eyes from screen every 15 minutes.
- Last but not the least, always use ergonomically designed desk and chair for computer use. It would maintain a comfortable distance between you and computer monitor.
