Using A Computer Keyboard Tray To Avoid Repetitive Strain Injury
Posted on Apr 24, 2009 | Comments 1
There are a lot of office products on the market and some are especially designed to prevent the occurrence of repetitive strain injury. The latter is a common ailment of the modern work environment.

A computer keyboard tray is made to hold both your keyboard and mouse; it is basically a small shelf that is fitted just below your main desk.
This then pulls out to suit the way you want to work at your station, in most cases on a ball bearing track like a filing cabinet drawer.
The traditional desks were designed long before computers were around so you can buy trays to fit them retrospectively. Many modern computer workstations have them incorporated so look out for them when next choosing office furniture.
If the keyboard tray is fitted correctly your feet will be flat on the floor and your wrist will be straight when you are typing. The waist and knees will be at right angles with your hips slightly higher than your knees. Finally your arms will be at ninety degree right angles with the elbows higher than your hands.
You will likely know if it is working, because after a while it will feel more relaxed when you are typing. Avoid leaning forward, upright is a much better position and puts less pressure on the back muscles.
The biggest thing about a computer keyboard tray is that it is a relatively cheap product that could make a world of difference. Once you have got one you will be amazed at how long you lasted without one.
