The archetype of the always-connected modern teen is the one with the latest gadget or gizmo in hand, texting away, oblivious to the world around them.
The very image may be an irritant for the parent who gets tuned out in the bargain. And now it would seem that there is another very real reason why using the phone to constantly send out text messages is a really bad idea.
Recent news reports have shown that carpal tunnel syndrome could be linked to too much texting.
A 16 year old from Chicago is now required to undergo surgery in both wrists as she has been diagnosed as the youngest ever person to suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
And it could all be due to habitual texting; as many as 3000 a month, or about a 100 a day!
Her symptoms included a tingling feeling to begin with, which then progressed to having difficulty holding objects.
Carpal Tunnel is a disorder that occurs to people engaged in repetitive motions (in this case constantly sending messages typing on a small keypad) which irritates the tendons. She now has to wear wrist braces to school and suffer being referred to as the ‘Carpal Tunnel Girl’. This is a rare condition in people under the age of 20.
