Tips for Preventing RSI Condition – Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Many around the world face are suffering with one type of RSI condition, carpal tunnel syndrome. This problem develops when the median nerves, which are located within the wrists, experience a feeling of pressure.

This pressure can lead to a burning sensation within the wrist, a limited range of motion, a sense of numbness or a feeling of tingling within the wrists. The carpal tunnel syndrome pain sometimes may wake up the afflicted individual in the middle of the night.

Tips for Preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Luckily, this condition can be prevented if you are informed about the proper precautions to take when operating a computer. The following are some preventative measures that you can take in order to limit your own personal susceptibility to the problem known as carpal tunnel syndrome.

  • Believe it or not, susceptibility to carpal tunnel is very much linked with the position of the computer monitor. Researchers in the field of carpal tunnel syndrome have noted that when the computer’s monitor is placed relatively far away from the individual and lower than their head can reduce the chances of occurrence of carpal tunnel syndrome. Your wrists are more likely to remain straight and level in this position, limiting the amount of stress that is placed on them. You should avoid any types of positions that can cause you to contort your body in an odd way such as if your desk is too high, and your wrists need to be bent down in order to properly type, it might be a better idea to keep the keyboard in your lap.
  • If you are in the middle of typing a large document, be sure to take time to stop and relax. Just a few minutes of down-time can help your wrists a lot in the long run.
  • Another thing to consider is how hard you hit your keys when you are typing. You are more likely to develop a case of carpal tunnel syndrome due to the strain that you are placing on your wrists if you pound on the keys. Instead, you should opt for a light touch. You should also take caution when it comes to gripping your mouse in the right manner. Keep the mouse close to your body and be sure not to grip or squeeze it too hard.
  • You may want to consider purchasing voice recognition software if you type overly too much. Voice recognition software allows you to create documents without the need for typing whatsoever, which can be of great benefit to someone who is susceptible to carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • It would be helpful in warding off the possibility of developing a case of carpal tunnel syndrome by keeping your arms and wrists warm. Cold wrists can result in cramping and a higher likelihood of injury.
  • Some people have found that it would be helpful in keeping good posture by increasing the font size on their computer. You are more likely to sit straight up, eliminating some of the discomfort that leaning forward can cause since you don’t have to squint and lean close in to the screen in order to read a larger font.
