Repetitive Strain Injury Prevention Steps for Students

Full time employees are at higher risk to work related repetitive strain injury than anyone else. However, that does not mean that full time employees are the only people out there getting stress related injuries from daily activities.

Due to the extended use of computer and video games, children can also get repetitive strain injuries. College students across the world are one group that is showing more and more signs of repetitive strain injuries.

The good news is that there is something being done to prevent this group of individuals from being at the top of the list for repetitive stress injuries. Take a look at why college students are at risk for RSI and what is being done to prevent it in college students.

Nowadays, college students are using their computers increasingly. They are required to write papers and do research for many classes. Some even use their computers in the classroom, for recording notes from lectures their professors are giving. All of this use is take a toll on their bodies however.

One thing that is causing problems for university students is Laptops. Sure, a laptop allows a student to sit on their couch, in a classroom, or anywhere else to do their computer work.

Actually, there are restaurants and cafés all over the nation that let their customers to use free wireless connections. This allows students to do their work by sitting in these cafés. Students are sitting in a poor posture while using laptops, which can contribute to repetitive stress injury.

Universities are creating ergonomic-friendly computer labs. These labs are equipped with the best seating options for those using the computer. The seats encourage good posture while on the computer. Ergonomic keyboards are also purchased for their computer labs by some universities.

Computer Stations

These healthy changes to the computers at the universities also generally include the computer stations of the professors. The university usually provides each professor with their own computer and they are beginning to get ergonomic computer accessories for the professors as well.

Educating about Repetitive Strain Injury

Universities are also educated their students and professors about repetitive strain injury in addition to remodeling their computer labs into healthier environments. They are making sure that everyone knows the symptoms and the prevention tips.

Some universities will pass out pamphlets and flyers. Others will cover the symptoms and prevention tips at freshman orientation or new staff orientation. Still others will hold annual seminars on the issue for everyone on campus.

The risk of repetitive strain injury on campus is growing. Actually, they are becoming a common complaint of college age students all over the world. So, be sure to pay special attention to your computer using habits if you are a college student.

Make sure to use proper posture and correct hand positions on the keyboard. Don’t forget take breaks between computer using sessions. All of these things will help you avoid repetitive strain injury
